Inactive Status

 A counselor, social worker, or marriage and family therapist licensed or registered with the board may, at the time of biennial renewal, apply for inactive status of his/her license. The application for inactive status shall be accompanied by the fee prescribed by rule 4757-1-05 of the Administrative Code and by a signed statement that the licensee will not engage in the active practice of counseling, social work, or marriage and family therapy, as defined respectively by divisions (A), (C) and (H) of section 4757.01 of the Revised Code, while the license is inactive.

 

The Inactive Status Process:

 

 Effective March 11, 2015.  Licensees who wish to renew their license as Inactive Click Renew your license  sign into the eLicense.Ohio.gov portal click the options button to complete a special request to place your license in Escrow status. You will need to renew into Inactive Status every two years if you wish to remain Inactive.

 

A licensee may renew into Inactive status only during the renewal period or after the renewal date,when the license has lapsed. Late fees will apply. If the license is currently Active, but the licensee is not practicing or out of State, etc. he or she must wait until the renewal period to renew to Inactive status.

 

Late fees: Licensees will be charged a late fee for renewing late into Inactive status. $20 late fee for licensees & $10 late fee for SWA registrants see below. 

 

The Inactive status is a non-practice status that allows licensees to renew their license without completing continuing education.  The inactive status is designed for licensees who are not currently working in their field and/or don’t plan to return to their field for the foreseeable future but who wish to retain their license.

 

Renewing into Inactive status will not require continuing education; however continuing education will be required to go from Inactive to Active status.

Renewal of an Inactive license is required every two years on your biannual renewal date. Once your license is renewed to Inactive status the letters ESCR will appear behind your license number.  ESCR stands for escrow.  This is a non-practice status.

Renewing while in the Inactive status.

Although your license is now Inactive/ESCR status, renewal every two years is required. You will receive a renewal notice 3 to six months prior to your renewal date. If you wish to continue in the inactive status you simply sign in and renew the available license. Continuing education is not required to continuing in the Inactive/ESCR status. If you wish to renew ACTIVE you must complete the required continuing education and submit proof of completion before you renew. See requirements for renewing Active below.

 

Requirements for renewing to Active status from Inactive/escrow status:

 

Licensees with an Inactive status may request to return to Active status at any time by renewing  their license.  Click Renew your license  sign into the eLicense.Ohio.gov portal, click options and select Reinstate from the drop down menu. Complete the request and be sure all continuing education requirements are complete and certificates uploaded into the system.  

 

 

Additional Ethics Hours: 

All licensees and registrants will need a total of thirty clock hours of continuing education which will include six hours of ethics. These hours must be completed within the two years prior to restoration of your license. 

 

If the licensee previously held supervision designation and would like to supervise after reactivation they will need to re-apply for the designation. Six hours of  approved supervision  hours will need to be completed within the two year period prior to restoration.  Click Renew your license  sign into the eLicense.Ohio.gov portal, click options and select Reinstate from the drop down menu under My Endorsements. Complete the request and be sure six hours of supervision certificates are complete uploaded into the system.  

 

Continuing education used to restore an Inactive license to Active cannot be used to renew the restored license.

 

An Inactive license restored to Active status will be required to renew their license in two years from the date of restoration. In most cases that date will not coincide with the original renewal date of your license.

4757-7-03(C)  applicants for restoration of an inactive license who have not engaged in the practice of counseling, social work, or marriage and family therapy for more than five years prior to the date the individual applies to the board for restoration may be subject to additional requirements.

1. Competency based performance appraisals

3. Additional continuing education 

4. Extended coursework and/or other learning or training options
