Inactive Status

4757-7-03 A counselor, social worker, or marriage and family therapist licensed or registered with the board may, at the time of biennial renewal, apply for inactive status of his/her license. The application for inactive status shall be accompanied by the fee prescribed by rule 4757-1-05 of the Administrative Code and by a signed statement that the licensee will not engage in the active practice of counseling, social work, or marriage and family therapy, as defined respectively by divisions (A), (C) and (H) of section 4757.01 of the Revised Code, while the license is inactive.

The Inactive Status Process:

Effective March 11, 2015.  Licensees who wish to renew their license as Inactive must first contact the CSWMFT Board (e-mail is preferred) so that staff may make an initial update to the online system. You will need to renew into Inactive Status every two years if you wish to remain Inactive.

A licensee may renew into Inactive status only during the renewal period (or after the renewal date if the status is “Failed to Renew.” Late fees will apply) If the license is currently Active, but the licensee is not practicing, out of state, etc. he or she must wait until the renewal period to renew to Inactive status.

Late fees will be charged for late renewals to Inactive status, including renewing to Inactive status from a lapsed/Failed to Renew status.

The Inactive status is a non-practice status that allows licensees to renew their license without completing continuing educationThe inactive status is designed for licensees who are not currently working in their field and/or don’t plan to return to their field for the foreseeable future but who wish to retain their license.

Renewing into Inactive status will not require continuing education; however continuing education will be required to go from Inactive to Active status.
