Marriage and Family Therapist Application Instructions

Education Requirement - complete a master’s or doctoral degree in marriage and family therapy.  Programs accredited by the "Commission On Accreditation Of Marriage And Family Therapy Education" (COAMFTE) at the time of the applicant's degree conferral are automatically approved, and those applicants may apply to take the licensing exam during the final semester of their degree program.  Applicants with degrees not accredited by COAMFTE must 1) meet the educational requirements here:, 2) must have fully completed and earned their degree, and 3) must submit additional information to determine eligibility to take the licensure exam.

Steps toward Licensure (ALL steps must be completed before your license can be issued):

1.) The first step for licensure is to complete the MFT license application online and pay the $80 application fee (plus a $3.50 processing fee):    You will need to register and create a User ID and password to access the e-License system.  Once you’ve registered, complete the application for Marriage and Family Therapist.

As part of this application, you will also be requesting approval to take the AMFTRB licensure exam.

Applicants from a COAMFTE-approved program must attach a degree or unofficial transcript if they have graduated, or a letter of good standing from the school indicating they will be graduating within the current academic term, and what their degree will be.

Applicants from a non-COAMFTE program must attach an Internship Evaluation form, Course Worksheet, and unofficial transcript.  The Board will review this information at their next meeting to determine the applicant’s eligibility to take the AMFTRB exam.

2.)   Upon receipt of the above items, you will receive an exam pre-approval email, approving you to contact Professional Testing Corporation (PTC) to pay the examination fee ($355).  Once you pay for the test, PTC will email information so you can schedule your test date with a PSI Testing Center in your area.  Your exam score will be received at the Board approximately 20 business days following the close of the testing period.

A calendar of test dates can be found on AMFTRB's website here.

The remaining steps for licensure can be completed in any order.
